Book Reviews
Mr. Glickstein had stage fright for years that eased a little as he "spoke" more often, even as a standup comedian. From his experiences, he developed some premises that he tested in groups called "speaking circles" in which speakers learned to voice their truths "from the heart" rather than to deliver polished memorized talks that might not connect with the audience. He is now an international consultant to individual and corporations in "transformational speaking."
Parenting with Love & Logic by Dr. Foster Cline and Jim Fay -
Dr. Foster Cline and educator Jim Fay's "Love and Logic" parenting method advocates raising responsible children through practice. "Helicopter" parents hover around their children while "dlill sergeant" parents give orders to theirs. Neither of these styles permits children to learn how to make choices and learn from the consequences. The result is that as early as adolescence these children too often make bad decisions. In the context of a healthy, loving relationship, "Love and Logic" parents teach their children responsibility and the logic of life by solving their own problems, providing skills for coping in the real world . .After laying out the principles of "Love and Logic," the authors provide "parenting pearls," which are strategies for applying the method to actual situations such as back-seat battles in the car, homework, and keeping bedrooms clean
The authors begin by guiding parents in developing the relational building blocks of effective parenting. They proceed to forty-one practical examples of love-and-Iogic parenting. This metllod teaches children to think, to decide, and to live with their decisions within the environment of a healthy, loving relationship wi.th their parents.
Readers will explore their own parenting style and discover where growth and developing new skills will put tlle fun back in parenting and how to nurture responsible children.
Let There Be Light: The Seven Keys by Rocco Errico
Rocco Errico was a student of the late George Lamsa, a Near Eastern theologian, Aramaic expert, and Bible translator. Errico studied all of Lamsa’s published works and began teaching classes on the Bible from the Near Eastern Aramaic perspective. After numerous requests for a teaching system that presents the Bible through Eastern eyes, he developed the Seven Keys to “clarify obscure passages of scripture” and ideas about God, Jesus, humankind, and the Universe “that may have been incorrectly understood from the biblical writers.”
The first seven chapters of this book explain the Seven Keys (comparing verses in the KJV with Lamsa’s Aramaic translation) and, briefly, are as follows:

First: Aramaic was the original language and culture of the Bible.
Second: Idioms were used which cannot be translated literally.
Third: Mysticism, such as dreams and visions, make up 40% of the Bible.
Fourth: Cultural aspects greatly influenced the writers.
Fifth: Near Eastern psychology is very different from that of Western world.
Sixth: Their symbolism gives special meaning to numbers, animals, etc.
Seventh: Amplification (exaggeration) was used to make events unforgettable.
In the second section of the book, the author applies the Seven Keys to a variety of well-known scriptural passages, concepts, stories, objects, and people in the Old and New Testaments.
This book is easy to read and interesting and could be valuable to anyone who desires a greater understanding of Bible teachings.
Jesus and Buddha: The Parallel Sayings, Edited by Marcus Borg
In the book’s preface, Mr. Borg, a “Jesus scholar”, speaks of the parallels in the lives of Jesus and Buddha—
Their "exalted births",
Their transformational experiences at about age thirty,
Their “ethical” teachings, such as “Love thy neighbor”,
Their “wisdom” teachings of “the Way”—seeing things differently, changing
sp; Within, and becoming more compassionate,
Their working for change within their “inherited religious traditions,”
And their “divine” status.
Borg also notes that Jesus alone had a “social and political passion” that probably accounted for the brevity of his earthly ministry.
In the next eleven chapters, the parallel saying are presented under headings such as “compassion”, “wisdom”, “temptation”, “miracles”, etc., with one saying of Jesus on the left hand page and the matching saying of the Buddha on right hand page. There is lots of empty space with room to ponder the ways in which these major religions are similar.
